Sediments 2010

This project was made possible with the participation of Géraldine Berger, during a residency at KompleXKapharnaüM in Lyon, France, in the fall of 2009.

“The sediment of any substance can be carried by the movement of fluid (…) and eventually settles, forming a layer of solid particles on the bed or bottom of a body of water or other liquid.”

Géraldine has been working with French Sign Language for a few years now. I wanted her to speak to me, to deliver a monologue using this language that was unfamiliar to me. I was confronted by several emotions during the shoot. First ignorance, then powerlessness, and, finally, fascination. There will always be a dichotomy between the actual meaning of gestures and my interpretation of them, the way I receive them with my sense of self and their own signification. Each gesture expresses something in French Sign Language, and it is defined differently in all the world’s other signed languages.
