Approaching Stillness

Approaching Stillness est un projet photographique qui débute à Bruxelles en 2008 alors que je travaille sur le thème de la solitude. Cette recherche, je la poursuis à Chalons-sur-Saône en 2009 où les personnages s’effacent jusqu’à mimer le paysage. Le propos se transforme tranquillement à Saint-Jean-sur-le-Richelieu en 2011 et résonne autour de l’abandon et de la perte d’identité. De Sainte-Thérèse à Sainte-Julienne en passant par Winnipeg et Mont-Joli, le sujet se stratifie et se regroupe bientôt sous les thèmes de la dépersonnalisation, de l’absence, de l’effacement, de l’abandon, de la disparition de l’être, de son intégration au paysage… pour mieux en camper l’humanité…

Les mises en scène présentent l’absence de certains membres, dont la tête, qui rendent compte de l’extrême dépersonnalisation de mes modèles, de leur abandon, de leur envie de se « fondre dans quelque chose ». Passage à vide ou l’inertie du décor questionne également la relation de l’humain avec son environnement (confort, habitude, réappropriation, identification, etc.). Le lieu déterminé et la position du modèle dans l’espace suggère une appartenance, un lien intrinsèque entre l’habitant et « l’habité ». Comme si le modèle, bien que fractionné, venait ajouter une complétude au décor et que de la perte, du vide créer par l’absence, naissait l’entièreté du propos…

J’entre actuellement dans la deuxième phase du travail où « les lieux » occuperont la totalité de l’image. Des décors vides de corps et dont l’absence fera surgir un manque, une pièce à ajouter…

Approaching Stillness is a photographic project that started in Brussels in 2008 while I was working on the theme of loneliness. This research, I continue it in Chalons-sur-Saône in 2009 where the characters disappear until they mimic the landscape. The subject is slowly changing in Saint-Jean-sur-le-Richelieu in 2011 and resonates around the abandonment and loss of identity. From Sainte-Thérèse to Sainte-Julienne, passing through Winnipeg and Mont-Joli, the subject soon became stratified and grouped under the themes of depersonalization, absence, erasure, abandonment, the disappearance of being, its integration into the landscape… to better capture humanity…

The productions present the absence of certain members, including the head, who reflect the extreme depersonalization of my models, their abandonment, their desire to « blend into something ». The empty passage or inertia of the setting also questions the relationship between humans and their environment (comfort, habit, reappropriation, identification, etc.). The determined place and the position of the model in space suggest a belonging, an intrinsic link between the inhabitant and the « inhabited ». As if the model, although fragmented, added a completeness to the setting and that from the loss, from the emptiness created by the absence, the whole purpose was born…

I am currently entering the second phase of the work where « the places » will occupy the entire image. Decorations empty of body and whose absence will bring out a lack, a piece to add…
